The Welsh Government is expected to consult in early 2017 on proposals for local government reform in Wales based on the concept of retaining the 22 local authorities as the ‘front-door’ to a range of services, some of which might be delivered regionally on a Local Health Board or a ‘city region’ footprint. An enhanced level of systematic and mandatory regional working would provide new opportunities for local government to share and implement best practice. The consultation is also expected to cover some of the previous Welsh Government proposals for local government reform that were set out in the former Draft Local Government (Wales) Bill.
