Decision details

"Reforming Local Government: Resilient and Renewed" White Paper

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The Welsh Government is expected to consult in early 2017 on proposals for local government reform in Wales based on the concept of retaining the 22 local authorities as the ‘front-door’ to a range of services, some of which might be delivered regionally on a Local Health Board or a ‘city region’ footprint. An enhanced level of systematic and mandatory regional working would provide new opportunities for local government to share and implement best practice. The consultation is also expected to cover some of the previous Welsh Government proposals for local government reform that were set out in the former Draft Local Government (Wales) Bill.

Decision:

RESOLVED: that

1.            the draft submission in response to the Welsh Government consultation on the White Paper entitled ‘Reforming Local Government: Resilient and Renewed’, as set out in Appendix A to this report be approved; and

2.            authority be delegated to the Chief Executive, in consultation with the Leader of the Council, to make any further amendments to the Council’s consultation response in advance of formal submission to the Welsh Government by 11 April 2017.
